As the winter holidays have officially kicked off Nathaniel and I are preparing for the Get inTouch Philly: Official Adobe Photoshop User Group free launch event. We felt it was our duty to clarify a few points on the new Adobe Touch Apps especially if you are preparing to fight Black Friday and Cyber Monday events. In no way should this email be viewed as anything other than a simple clarification for individuals looking to buy a new tablet. If tablets are not on your wish list this year jump to the bottom of this post for some really great savings Adobe.com and additional user group discounts.

Take Two Tablets and Call Me in the Morning

Firstly, of the six new touch apps two are available for both Android (Honeycomb 3.1 or better) and iOS (iPhone and iPad) and can be found in their respective app stores. The remainder of this article will focus on the Android apps.

According to the Adobe Touch Apps website:

“… Adobe Touch Apps require a compatible Android tablet running Honeycomb 3.1 or higher, and a minimum screen resolution of 1280 X800. An Internet connection is required to transfer files with Adobe Creative Cloud. Adobe Ideas is also available for the iPad and iPhone…..”

Now, if you are not already aware, the Android Market is very segmented within itself with several flavors of the OS both active and available from a host of well-known and not so well-known manufacturers, no longer does “I have an android” tell the whole story. In order to prevent buyer’s remorse please be very clear of which version of Android that you require/ intend to purchase in order to meet your mobile computing needs.

DO NOT RELY ON THE SELLER! I have been told by several store managers this week that all Androids run the same OS. This is simply not true! This holiday season features tablets ranging from Froyo 2.2 to Honeycomb 3.2. Again, if you are planning to use the newly launched Photoshop Touch it does require Honeycomb 3.1 and also needs to be capable of supporting the resolutions mentioned above. Lastly for the whole experience your tablet should have an integrated camera. Photo Touch allows you to import your content from Google, the web, your social media and even directly from your onboard camera!

On top of OS fragmentation from Google(Android’s Maker), several products such as Nook, Nook Tablet and Amazon’s Fire are being pitched as Android tablets, and while true they actually run on proprietary flavors of Android built on top of the Android OS software. The Honeycomb 3.1 requirement does not include “rooted” or other non-native device OS. Again do not rely on the seller for items that are not out of the box Honeycomb 3.1 or better. A quick trip to wikipedia will show you that only 1.4 of the Androids on the market are truly Honeycomb OS (in 3 versions). Be forewarned the breakdown of Android versions can be daunting.

I will also let you know that Adobe itself has sent us the second generation of Samsung Android Tablets, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, for the Adobe Touch App Launch Party meeting at Philadelphia University. The Philadelphia Photoshop User Group will be the first “public” demonstration of the new products be sure to register. The Galaxy 10.1 has been the demo tablet of choice for all of the Adobe Touch App Family on Adobe TV and at MAX demos. While other tablets are being tested, it is clear that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 works well with the Adobe Touch Apps.

In [a word] a Galaxy Far, Far away…

Now as an early adopter of gadgets, I have had my share of buyer beware moments with Samsung, but I am telling you this tablet is rock solid! Side by side with the Apple iPad2 it is impressive. The Honeycomb 3.1 UI combined with a flawless integration of Samsung’s own TouchWiz (adding Samsung’s Live Panel, Mini Apps, and a newly redesigned Media Hub interface) makes for a beautiful user experience. The Galaxy Tab’s look feel and performance make this an excellent choice for your first Android tablet.

The Adobe Touch Apps will work with the Galaxy Tab10.1 and the Galaxy Tab 8.9, but not the Galaxy Tab 7. The reasons for this is that the Galaxy Tab7 runs on Froyo 2.2 Android OS and the Galaxy Tab7 Plus, even though it runs Honeycomb3.2, its screen resolution (1024 x 600) is just under 250 pixels from being a solution for the TouchApps. See what I mean? Unless it meets the minimum requirements, well then, as Obi Wan said, “These are not the Droids you’re looking for.”
